Doing The Right Thing
Hello and greetings from the Godfather of Fun at the fun dept. Thank you for joining me as we highlight the top corporate values as part of our BRINGING VALUES TO LIFE series.
Honesty and Transparency. These values are also closely aligned with integrity and trust that appear on many corporate value lists.
Companies that have a clearly defined purposeful mission report 49% lower attrition. (LinkedIn). These values are a direct reflection of leadership’s behavior and personal practice.
In 2018 the Most Ethical Companies outperformed the US Large Cap Index by 4.88%. In 2019 that gap rose to 10.5%! (LinkedIn) It pays to do good!
Here is a Doing The Right Thing EXAMPLE:
Sallie Mae involves their associates (in addition to management) in Values creation and voting on the outcomes. Associates and managers are recognized, rewarded, and compensated for “doing the right thing.” Employees have broad leeway in helping clients and fellow associates who are struggling in any way.
Here is your Do The Right Thing CHALLENGE:
What information can you share that is currently reserved for C-level folks? Top-line financials are a great place to start. Employees want to know how they can contribute if they have a sense of purpose. Review your rewards, recognition, and compensation programs to ensure that they are not just focused on the bottom line but on “doing the right thing.” Highlight those activities in newsletters and company communications.
Next to doing the right thing, the most important thing is to let people know you are doing the right thing.
