Humility At The Office

As we continue to highlight the top corporate VALUES as part of our BRINGING VALUES TO LIFE series, we move on to our next value…

Today it is all about HUMILITY.

Fun flattens an organizational chart and endears employees to leaders who embrace fun.

Journal of Management found that having humble leaders resulted in higher-performing teams, better collaboration, and flexibility.

Here is an EXAMPLE of Humility:

Years ago I asked Tony Hsieh with Zappos to use his name to recognize companies with an award who embraced fun in the workplace. He responded immediately by saying it could be the Zappos award but not his name since everyone at his company was responsible for their success. His desk and work area was also in the general work area instead of some special corner office. Other companies are doing away with hierarchical titles and traditional executive offices to demonstrate teamwork and humility.

Here is your Humility CHALLENGE:

Where can you break down a barrier in your organization? Think about self-appointed titles or moving the break room to a space where ALL employees can engage with one another. Encourage the folks upstairs to go downstairs, take the doors off of executive offices, and share personal stories of challenges and setbacks to let people know that you are relatable and human. Having fun with employees is a great place to start.

Cheers to more fun ahead and I’ll see you next time.

There is no respect for others without humility in one’s self.
