Make America Happy Again!
Why did the US drop in the World Happiness Ranking, and what can we do about it?
According to Gallup, the US has slipped out of the top 20 list for the first time in the report’s 12-year history. Itβs No. 23 – down from a 15th-place finish the previous year. This was alarming and sad news as I have spent most of my life advocating for fun and happiness. Most concerning is that the data indicates the decline is largely attributable to those under 30 feeling unsatisfied with their lives. On the bright side, those 60 and above still rank in the top 10 in the US.
While the data can be used to make many inferences, many experts agree that feeling isolated, disconnected, or inferior due to lifestyles built around social media is a root cause. Many young people communicate almost exclusively through devices with very little human interaction. Other factors, such as the US becoming increasingly polarized with hateful rhetoric and violence, leave young people feeling helpless.
So what can we do? Why not try small acts of kindness? A smile, holding a door open, or saying hello to a stranger can make a difference. Mentor a young person at work and help break down age barriers. On a broader scale, encourage social interactions at home, work, and community where people can engage with each other on a human and real level.
What’s the Happiest Country on Earth?
In the latest World Happiness Report, the US has fallen to 23rd place, down from 15th the previous year, marking its first time out of the top 20. The decline is primarily due to younger Americans (under 30) feeling less satisfied with their lives, ranking 62nd for this age group. Interestingly, Americans over 60 still rank in the top 10 (barely). Meanwhile, Finland remains the happiest country overall for the seventh consecutive year.

We have an exciting mission ahead of us, and we need YOU to be part of it. Our beloved US has dropped in the World Happiness Ranking, sliding down to No. 23. But guess what? We can turn things around and spread joy across the nation!
π What’s Happening? According to Gallup, the US has slipped out of the top 20 happiest countries for the first time in 12 years. That’s a wake-up call! The most troubling part? Our younger generation, those under 30, are feeling the brunt of it, grappling with dissatisfaction and disconnection. Yet, there’s a silver lining: our seniors (60+) are still rocking it in the top 10!
π Why the Drop? Experts point fingers at several culprits:
- Isolation: Our digitally-driven lives are making us feel more alone than ever.
- Polarization: Increasing societal divides and negative rhetoric leave many feeling hopeless.
- Social Media: The pressure to portray perfect lives online is taking a toll on our mental well-being.
π What Can We Do? It’s time to take action! Here are some simple yet powerful ways to inject happiness into our lives and communities:
- Acts of Kindness: A smile, a friendly hello, or holding the door open can brighten someone’s day.
- Mentorship: Bridge the generation gap by mentoring a young person at work. Share wisdom and build connections!
- Real Interactions: Encourage face-to-face interactions at home, work, and in your community. Let’s put the “social” back in socializing!
